OBS

Open Broadcaster Software is an open source live streaming/recording program. This is going to sound like an advert – but it isn’t. I just really really like it and want it to succeed.

If anyone has tried streaming their desktop they probably know about xsplit. It’s about as good as it gets. It works, you can do stuff. But it’s far, far, far, far, far from perfect. It’s pretty slow. And as far as I know it doesn’t have any plugin support.

OBS is like black magic. It records and you don’t even notice. Maybe it is magic, or maybe it’s just coded really really well, or maybe it’s taking advantage of some Windows 8 desktop recording thing I’ve been hearing about.

But check this video out. This is me, recording 3 huge monitors (all 2560×1440) and 3 HD webcams, downscaling them to 720p and saving them to a mp4. This is all done on the fly. It isn’t saving to some huge format and then processing it afterwards. BLACK MAGIC.

The best thing is it’s open source. So you can go in there and see what’s making it work. Or mod it. One of the things I wanted in XSplit was to have it follow my cursor around. No plugins meant that wasn’t gonna happen unless the guy who makes it decided to add it. With this I don’t have to wait – I can just make it happen. Or maybe if it’s done right (to work with the licensing) I could add lagless twitch streaming/mp4 recording right in GMod using it.

Even though it is awesome it is still in early beta. Version 0.51 right now. So it has some way to come. But it’s a horse you should back.

  1. Damn right, man! Love this software. Been using it for months now and it just keeps getting better and better. Glad to hear the good word getting out :)

  2. I use this to play my PS3 through my PC using my capture card. Any other software I use either has a pixelated looking feed, a noticable delay or I can’t hear sound but this has none of those issues and I can even stream without an issue at the click of a button.

The only problem I have is that it crashes randomly if I try to record the window with DxTory and I’d want to do that for a better local recording while streaming and multi-channel audio recording for easier editing.

  3. Holy carp, was looking for something like this. Didn’t like XSplit being paid software to use all of its stuff and rid of the watermarks. Thanks for the awesome link!

  4. you know instead of writing on your blog.. GO FIX FUCKING GMOD! because of the new shitty update certain models are invisible to me… i did all the guides defrag verifyed and updated Cs:s now hurry up and fix the god damn thing my servers now rank 50 cause no can see anyone

  5. This sounds really cool, but I have a mac, are there any other programs like this that are free that cause no lag while recording?

  6. Xsplit does have a plugin feature. But I think they have to be confirmed to be safe before you can download then through the program itself

  7. Garry, on update 163 about the missing textures thing I did what you told us to do if it happened, but it didn’t work for me, so if you can, and have the time, could you please help?

  8. Having used XSplit for some hours, I had no luck trying to stream at 60fps… this does it flawlessly with no dropped frames and better image quality. IT IS black magic.

    1. Your reply is a fail. Instead of bitching about what sucks about it look at what it can do or help make it cross platform.
